This is a heart-wrenching story of a young Nigerian boy who was left on his own by his family to wander and die in the streets.
The boy spent about eight months living off tits-bits of food and leftovers thrown at him by Nigerian folks who passed by after being disowned by his family who proclaimed that the baby was a witch! The boy was found in a frail condition, infested with worms, naked and looking like a mummified body by a generous Danish woman living in Africa named Ms. Anja Ringgren Loven.
The day she found him, he look emaciated with ribs projecting out like stripes on his bare chest while the hands and legs looked nothing more than dark coloured match-sticks. Ms. Loven was so horrified on seeing this condition of the baby that she immediately sat down for feeding the boy, giving him food and water. She named him Hope.
The disoriented boy was picked up by Anja in her arms wrapping a blanket around him and taken to the nearest hospital so that proper treatment may be initiated.
Ms. Loven is the founder of African Children’s Aid Education and Development Foundation (ACAEDF), which she created 3 years ago to help children that had been labelled as a ‘witch’ and therefore neglected and even killed by the members of their community.
Anja wrote on Facebook, ‘Thousands of children are being accused of being witches and we have both seen torture of children, dead children and frightened children,’ along with pictures of her feeding the child and appeals for donations so that the medical expenses of the boy could be adequately born by her foundation.
When Hope reached the hospital, he was given a warm water bath so that his body may be disinfected. He was then started on a deworming therapy to remove the worms from his stomach along with daily transfusions of whole blood so that his anemia may be corrected.
Two days after Ms. Loven asked for donation to help with Hope’s costly medical bills, she received $1 million in donations from around the world. She said, ‘With all the money, we can, besides giving Hope the very best treatment, now also build a doctor clinic on the new land and save many more children out of torture!’
Anja runs a children’s center where the children she rescues live and receive medical care, food and schooling. She and her husband, David Emmanuel Umem, began building their own orphanage in late January.
Ms. Loven said, ‘Hope’s condition is now stable. He is taking food for himself and he responds to the medicine he gets.’ Ms. Loven said Hope even plays with her own son, David Jr. ‘Today, he has had powers to sit up and smiling at us. He is a strong little boy,’ she added.
Ms. Loven added many picture of Hope recuperating well, transforming from a mere monstrous-looking alien to a cute little human child. Nigerian community to which Hope belongs is a community in which superstition is deeply rooted. This generous lady and her organisation is doing their best to weed out this evil.
‘When the world says give up… Hope whispers… Try it one more time!’
