Narendra Modi took us by storm when he took to the streets and swept them with a broom. It was the perfect way to launch his campaign of making India a cleaner country. This campaign came to be known as the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission). This campaign has been going on with great force and enigma. Several Bollywood actors have also cared to endorse this Abhiyan. The media is also enthusiastic about covering this campaign. Having high media coverage, impressive slogans and endorsements by celebrities are probably not going to make this country cleaner. There are several other aspects to it and there is no guarantee if those have been taken care of.
The citizens of the country are the reason for the unclean streets and dirty roads. Changing the mindsets of the people and sensitizing them towards making this a cleaner country, is an integral part of this Abhiyan. The whole nation is fixated on the Government implementing this campaign and cleaning up the nation but is anybody even realizing why this is being done and what they should do to help this become a success.
Sweeping up the streets is not enough. The need for sweeping arises because garbage is thrown on the streets or the road. Lack of dustbins leads to people throwing everything on the streets. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan should include putting up a larger number of dustbins on the streets and footpaths so that people realize they need to throw things in the dustbins.
Whatever bins that have already been put end up overflowing and there isn’t enough cleaning staff who take out the trash from these dustbins. Lack of staff in cleaning department is a major issue and we don’t see it being tackled.
Waste disposal is pathetic and the waste that is accumulated stays accumulated and never disposed of. The disposal systems are not in place. We end up creating little hills of garbage and waste which ultimately make the nearby areas inhabitable.
Targeting the mindsets of the people may be very important but there is the requirement of good infrastructure for that. If we have the infrastructure in place, naturally the behavioral change can be brought about.
Not only do animals defecate on the street but even people end up doing so and it is disgusting. Defecation is not the only thing, we all know urination on roads and streets is fairly common and both of these things need to be stopped. Creating urinals and public washrooms have been initiated, but the figures of the past one year suggest that this has not been implemented that well.Keeping aside the technicalities of this Abhiyan we should also take note of the fact that such initiatives always become a way for politicians to get some spotlight and they try their best to make money out of it. Corruption can infiltrate a campaign against cleaning also and we will never find out. I guess keeping the campaign clean in itself is also very important and there has been no guarantee of that as of now.

One other thing noticed is that Swachh Bharat campaign has become a photo-op for Netas. Celebrities are also joining the show and finding a way to promote themselves. Somewhere down the line, this campaign seems to be becoming a selfish agenda of promoting. The aim of Swachh Bharat is to honor Mahatma Gandhi’s 190
The aim of Swachh Bharat is to honor Mahatma Gandhi’s 190th birth anniversary with a clean and hygienic India. It is a long term process and it requires a long-term policy which is well defined and has a clear vision. It’s funny how this campaign is lacking the main components of cleanliness which are the three Rs- Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. These three Rs need to be promoted through this program and fed into people’s mind to actually implement them.
