A Study Suggests That Boiling Tea Doubles Your Risk Of Cancer

Tea is what we need every morning to start our day and having a few cups in the middle of the day is no biggie. But did you know gulping down a hot cup of tea might increase your risk of cancer much more?

Which cancer we are talking about? Esophageal cancer is what you are prone to if you consume piping hot tea. New research that was conducted on 50000 people in Golestan, a northern province of Iran. Tea drinkers who drank tea at more than 60 degree Celsius and consumed more than 700 ml of it in a day had 90% higher risk of esophageal cancer than the people who drink lesser tea and at a cooler temperature.

Dr. Farhad Islami, of the American Cancer Society and the study’s lead author, said that people do prefer drinking tea, coffee or other hot beverages. However, according to our report, it is advisable to have it once the tea has cooled down.

This study was published in the International Journal of Cancer on March 20 and this is the first study to pinpoint temperature factor. Stephen Evans, a professor of pharmacoepidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine said that the temperature was the concern rather than the type of beverage.

Although he was not involved in research but he said anything way too hot can cause injury to esophagus such as eating microwaved jam. So, if such injury happens, it can lead to change in cells and that in turn can cause cancer.

If we study the consumption of tea geographically then you may realize that location matters. In the United States and Europe people don’t really drink boiling hot tea but if we see the scenario of countries like Russia, Iran, Turkey, and South America, there people are into hot tea that may exceed the temperature of 65 degree Celsius.

In Russia and the Middle East, people drink tea that is served directly from samovar which is under constant heat. Dr. James Doidge, a senior research associate at University College London believes that hot drinks increase the risk of esophageal cancer. You don’t need a scientist to tell you that repeated irritation on any surface of skin increases your cancer of cancer. We all know harsh sunburns can give us skin cancer and smoking gives us lung cancer, similarly drinking hot beverages, irritate the lining of the esophagus and that too can give you esophageal cancer.

Hence, it is no longer a mystery why drinking hot tea will increase your risk of cancer.
